The 2010 - 2011 competitive season is coming to a close, and Aura Rhythmics of Zone 4 had a fulfilling and successful year for all the athletes. The year began in the fall of 2010 with travel to Moscow for World Championships 2010, with Demetra Mantcheva and Kamena Petkova. Following Worlds, Demi, Mariam and Ali gave great performances and scooped the prestigious Team Silver Medal at Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India. After retirement Demi is now assistant coaching with the club. We are all gearing up for an intensive summer camp throughout the month of August 2011. We will be hosting gymnasts from across Canada at the camp, and look forward to productive, fun filled sessions for all the gymnasts.
January 2011 saw a great start for our girls with a trip to Las Vegas for the first open invitational competition of the year with National and Provincial athletes from across Canada and the USA. The season swung into full gear with Elite Canada in Winnipeg, and two Zones, followed by National Stream Provincials, Westerns in Edmonton, and Nationals in Montreal.
Congratulations are in store for all the numerous medal successes of the athletes. Champion Annabelle Kovacs was the Silver Medalist on the Junior National Team. Annabelle is now the second ranked Junior in Canada, and will move to Senior next season at Elite Canada. Our own novice, Cindy Huh, gave wonderful performances and, as a result, finished the all round as the Bronze Medalist on the Novice National Team. After her ranking as top Novice at Westerns, Cindy won two Silver medals in finals at Nationals in Montreal, and she will qualify to Elite next year as one of the top 6 novices moving to Junior. Other athletes who qualified to Elite Canada 2012 from Aura Rhythmics in the highly competitive Junior field are Karen Hong, Lisa Huh, and Kaylie Choi. It was a very exciting week in Montreal. Way to go girls!
We would like to honor Katya Lissovaia, Carmen Fung, Maria Naverniouk, Alicia Kiing, Rachel Loif, Abigail Burke, Megan Mori, Leah Weidman, Chloe Sy, Cindy and Lisa Lissovaia, Lana Radomsky and Miranda Bakonyi for their excellent performances throughout the year, and their medals at qualifying competitions. Good luck to all the Provincial girls next weekend in Victoria. You will be able to showcase your skills, and be ready for the exciting
yearend performance on June 19th along with the national level athletes.
Future plans for Aura athletes include an overseas trip with national team gymnasts from the Okanagan in late 2011 or 2012, and Brevet judge Diana Coop Nerman. Special appreciation is extended to our coaches, who have been a source of inspiration to the team. Thank you to Kamena, Yimei, Camille, Gina, Demi and Lauren for their dedication and expertise. We felt that this was our most successful year ever, and we truly are grateful for the wonderful parents and their families who have always been so supportive of Aura Rhythmics. See you at camp, and have a wonderful well deserved summer break!
